Women's tennis team defeats SCF-Manatee

The Eastern Florida State College women's tennis picked up a 7-2 win against the State College of Florida Manatee on Thursday afternoon.

The Titans improved to 1-1 in the Region 8 Conference and 4-1 overall with the win.

Eastern Florida State College swept the doubles against the short-handed Manatees.

The duo of Simona Karlsson and Helena Johanovic won the final three points to take an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles while Emma Sanchez and Gloria Barcaro tied things at 5-5 and then also won the final three points to win 8-5.

The Titans headed into the singles matches up 4-0 with a forfeit at No. 5 singles, Eastern Florida State College lost two singles matches and two of the final three went into a third-set tiebreaker.

Luisa Renovales took the first set quickly, 6-1 and then lost a close second set 6-4 to force the tiebreaker. Up 2-1 in the tiebreaker, Renovales would win four of the next five points to lock up the victory and the match for the Titans.

Helena Jokanovic won a close match at No. 4 singles, taking the first set 6-4 and then fell behing 5-4 in the second before coming back to post the 7-6(4) win.

Emma Sanchez split the first two sets, winning the first set 6-2 and dropping the second set 6-4. Sanchez won the No. 1 singles tiebreaker 6-3 to wrap up the match.

Eastern Florida State College will be in action Friday morning against USC Sumter at 10 a.m. at Titan Tennis Center.
