Women's tennis team tops SCF-Manatee

The Eastern Florida State College women's tennis team edged the State College of Florida-Manatee 5-4 Friday afternoon in a region match at Titan Tennis Center on the Melbourne campus.

After SCF-Manatee took a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches, the Titans came back with wins by Chengeto Moyana and Ivett Castenada in straight sets.

With the match tied 3-3, Manatee took the lead with a win at No. 3 singles, but the final three singles matches all went to a third set.

The No. 1 singles match between Titans' Tsveti Trifonova and Manatee's Sarah Ramirez Goncalves was a battle that lasted almost three hours with Trifonova picking up the three-set win. Goncalves won the first set 7-5 but Trifonova came back to post a 6-2 win in the second set to force a third set.

Things were tight early as the match was tied 2-2 in the third set before Trifonova won the next four points and went on for the 6-3 win.

Teammate Rachel Weaver also played a two-hour singles match at No. 4 singles. The freshman won the first set 6-4 but falling 6-4 to send the match to a third set. Weaver took over in the third, winning the match 6-2.

The team of Moyana and Castenada picked up the lone win in doubles, winning No. 3 doubles 8-0.

The Titans will host St. Petersburg College Thursday at 4 p.m. and then travel to Hillsborough CC on Friday in region matches.
