Women's tennis team fares well at ITA Regional Championship

The Eastern Florida State College women's tennis team has a couple of freshmen playing in the semifinals of the consolation draw Sunday at the ITA Regional Championships in Tampa.

Martina Garcia and Rachel Weaver will both play in the consolation semifinals today with a berth to the championship on the line.

Garcia advanced by defeating teammate Marta Escude in the quarterfinals and will play Broward's Veronica Gallardo in the semifinal. Weaver beat St. Petersburg's Abigail Turnquest 8-2 to advance to the semifinals where she will face State College of Florida's Sara Ramirez.

Sophomore Tsveti Trifanova reached the semifinals of the main draw, losing to Hillsborough's Fabiola Candal 6-1, 3-6, 10-2. Teammate Chengeto Moyana made it to the quarterfinals of the main draw, losing to ASA Miami's Tatiana Simova who is in the final today. Moyana advanced to the quarterfinals by coming back after losing the first set 6-3 to win 7-5 and 10-3 but couldn't get past Simova.

Doubles teams of Moyana and Ivett Casteneda and Garcia and Weaver both reached the quarterfinals of the main draw.
