Women's tennis team has solid first day at national tournament

The Eastern Florida State College women's tennis team had a strong first day at the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament at Waco Regional Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.

Sarah Manseri took the court first in a No. 2 singles match and was sharp, defeating Pima Community College's Janine Fernando 6-2, 6-0 and the No. 5 seed will play Jones County's Ariadna Jordan in the round of 16 match on Monday. 

Shaeda Nickle also picked up a win in singles, cruising past Seminole State's Mariah Turney 6-1, 6-0 in a No. 5 singles match Sunday. Nickle will play the No. 1 seed in No. 5 singles, Tyler Junior College's Oceane Garibal at 11 a.m. Monday.

Jaime Duque fell in her first round match in No. 4 singles and will await an opponent in the consolation round.

Yuliana Monroy is the No. 2 seed at No. 1 singles and had a bye in the first round. The sophomore will play Laredo Community College's Chantal Lozano who won 6-2, 6-4 at 9 a.m. on Monday.

Dugleisy Linarez also had a bye in the first round at No. 3 singles and the sophomore will play Aletta Macheli of Cowley who won 6-0, 6-1 at 10 a.m.

At No. 6 singles, Emma Othmer is the No. 5 seed and had a bye. The freshman will play Cowley's Coraline Lamer at 11:45 a.m. Monday.

The No. 1 doubles team of Monroy and Manseri are the No. 5 seed and opened the national tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jacksonville's Gabby Mireles and Syvoney Ybarra. They will play New Mexico Military's Mikayla Lopez and Georjemah Row in the round of 16.

The No. 2 doubles team of Linarez and Nickle are the No. 5 seed and had a bye in the first round. They will play North Central Texas' Carolina Fabbri and Yana Goranova.

The No. 3 doubles duo of Othmer and Duque also had a bye in the first round as the No. 6 seed.
