Titans Have Good Day in Regional Tennis Tournament's First Day

Day one of the NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA women's tennis tournament is in the books, and Eastern Florida is making a little noise.

The Titans will have two doubles teams in the semifinals when action resumes on Saturday at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs.

Three singles players and another doubles team will be playing in the consolation finals.

Annaleigh Collings and Giulianna Hull won their first-round match at No. 2 doubles over their State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota opponents 6-0, 7-5 to reach the semifinals.

At No. 3 doubles, EFSC's Ann-Kathrin Zilles and Ana Cristina Orozco defeated Hillsborough 6-1, 6-2 in their opening match.

Collings, Hull and Nicole Trio all lost their first-round singles matches, but were victorious in the consolation round to advance to the finals.

Trio and Katharina Drebka also advanced to the consolation finals at No. 1 doubles.

Drebka, Orozco and Zilles won their opening singles matches, but were eliminated in the next round.

Still, it was an impressive showing for Drebka, the Titans' No. 1 player.

After losing to Broward's Anastasiia Goncharova 6-0, 6-2 in the final regular-season match, Drebka came back Friday to post a 7-6, 6-3 victory and advance to the next round where she eventually lost to No. 1 ASA Miami's top player.

"Kathi proved she's one of the top five players in Florida," Titans coach Jerry Thor said. "Two doubles teams advanced to day two. Just a good day overall with five great wins in the main draw."
