Titan Women Sweep Tennis Matches

The Eastern Florida State College women's tennis team swept a pair of non-conference matches Sunday at the Titan Tennis Center.

After defeating Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania 9-0 in an afternoon match, the Titans returned to the court to defeat Southern Indiana 5-4 as Giulianna Hull delivered the match-winning victory at No. 2 singles.

"It was great that we had the ability to host a pair of out-of-state NCAA Division II teams at our Titan Tennis Center," EFSC coach Jerry Thor said. "We played our first night match under the lights and the atmosphere was incredible."

Knowing the Titans had two matches to play in one day, Thor decided to rest No. 1 singles player Katharina Drebka after the Titans swept the doubles against Bloomsburg.

Hull moved up to the No. 1 spot and rolled past Bloomsburg's Gabriele Bachinski 6-0, 6-0. The Titans also got singles wins from Annaleigh Collings, Nicole Trio, Ann-Kathrin Zilles, Ana Cristina Orozco and Naomi Villa.

The match against Southern Indiana proved to be much tougher as the Titans found themselves trailing 2-1 after some tight, well-played doubles action. The team of Drebka and Trio won their match at No. 2 by a score of 8-5 with Southern Indiana taking the other two doubles encounters by scores of 8-6 and 9-8 (1).

Trio – who went 4-0 on the day – won her match at No. 4 singles over Kym Brannon 6-4, 6-1 to tie the match up at 2-2. EFSC also got a victory at No. 5 singles as Zilles defeated Jennifer Mizikar 6-4, 6-0.

After Drebka defeated Liz Wilm 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 1 spot to finish her day 3-0, Hull clinched the victory for the Titans with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Kelsey Shipman at No. 2 singles.

"Kathi managed to defeat a tough opponent to tie things at 4-4, then Giuli delivered the big win to clinch the match, which is something that I'm sure she won't forget," Thor said.

The wins improved EFSC to 6-4 overall on the season, a victory record for the three-year-old program.

The Titans will return to action on Friday when they host Slippery Rock University. The match begins at 10 a.m. Admission is free.
