Mixed Results for Eastern Florida Tennis on Tournament's First Day

Four Eastern Florida women's tennis team members advanced to the second round of singles in the USTA /ITA Regional Tournament at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs on Friday but then were defeated.

One doubles team is in the main draw semifinals.

The singles players were sophomore Ali Andrews and Nicole Trio and freshmen Annaleigh Collings and Giulianna Hull.

Andrews won her first-round match 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 while Trio won 6-2, 6-2. Hull won 6-1, 6-1 and Collings had a bye.

In their second-round matches Andrews lost 6-0, 6-1, Trio lost 6-2, 6-4, Hull lost 6-1, 6-1 and Collings fell 6-0, 6-0.

On Saturday, freshman Naomi Villa, Collings and sophomore Samantha Martin play opponents in the singles consolation back draw beginning at 9 a.m.

Each singles player and doubles team are guaranteed two matches thus the consolation compeptition.

In doubles on Friday, Collings and Hull lost 8-2 in the first round at No. 1; Trio and Villa won 8-2 at No. 2 and advanced to the semifinals after the second-seeded team withdrew due to injury; Andrews and Martin lost 8-1 at No. 3. 

Collings and Hull and Andrews and Martin will compete in the doubles consolation round.

Joining Eastern Florida at the tournament are Broward College, Florida State College Jacksonville, Hillsborough Community College, St. Petersburg College and State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota.

The tournament's singles and doubles champions advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships Oct. 15-18 at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina.

"It was good to see us pick up some wins and have four players advance to the Final 16," said Eastern Florida head coach Jerry Thor. "I'd like to see the team continue to battle and finish the tournament strong."
