Regional Tournament Awaits Eastern Florida Women's Tennis

Eastern Florida State College's women's tennis team competes this weekend at the USTA /ITA Regional Tournament at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL.

The event doubles as the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) Fall Tournament. Joining Eastern Florida will be Broward College, Florida State College Jacksonville, Hillsborough Community College, St. Petersburg College and State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota.

Last spring, tennis' championship season, FCSAA champion Florida State College finished third at the NJCAA Division I Women's National Championship tournament with 35 team points, the second-best finish in school history. Florida State College Jacksonville and Broward tied for fourth with 28 points each.

This fall tournament's singles and doubles champions advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships Oct. 15-18 at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina.

Competing for Eastern Florida this weekend will be sophomores Aly Andrews, Nicole Trio and Samantha Martin and freshmen Naomi Villa, Giulianna Hull and Annaleigh Collings.

Collings and Hull, Trio and Villa and Andrews and Martin will be paired at doubles for head coach Jerry Thor. The singles order will be Hull at No. 1, Collings at No. 2, Trio at No. 3, Villa at No. 4, Andrews at No. 5 and Martin at No. 6.

"This will be our first look at the teams in the region, and should serve as a measuring stick for how far we need to go to compete with the best players in the state," Thor said.

"It should provide valuable experience for the players as they continue to test themselves against strong competition and use those takeaways to improve their games in practice."
