Women's soccer team hands Daytona State first loss of season

The Eastern Florida State College women's soccer team handed Daytona State College its first loss of the season Monday night in a Region 8 Conference game Monday night at Orlando Health Stadium on the Melbourne campus.

The eighth-ranked Titans defeated the Falcons 4-1 to improve to 2-0 in the Region 8 Conference.

And they got on the board early as Lena Borges hit a shot from outside the box that went into the upper left corner of the net to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. It was the first goal of the season for Borges.

Daytona State would tie the game after a penalty in the box gave them a penalty kick with 35 minutes remaining. Wakaba Kogure converted the penalty kick and it was 1-1.

The Titans would control things for much of the first half and had a couple of chances, but the teams went to halftime tied 1-1.

It stayed that way for almost 20 minutes before Zara Anderson scored her second goal of the game to make it 2-1. Three minutes later Laura Di Mascio hit a nice corner kick that defender Hannah Atchison buried into the back of the net.

Atchison was making her first start for the Titans and ended up giving the Titans a lift with her first career goal.

"It has always been a dream of mine to start a college game, it was awesome," Atchison said. "After the first one (corner kick), I thought, alright this one is mine, I know it! I saw it, did a spin move and it went right into the back of the net!"

Di Mascio scored the fourth goal of the evening for the Titans with 2:13 remaining to secure the win.

Lauren Pastor made a couple of big saves in goal for the Titans, recording four saves.

Eastern Florida State College (7-2-1, 2-0) will host Polk State College on Wednesday night in a Region 8 Conference match at 7 p.m. Admission is free to games at Orlando Health Stadium and you can watch the game live online at the EFSC Titans YouTube page.
