Women's soccer team ties Monroe College

The Eastern Florida State College women's soccer team battled Monroe College to a scoreless tie Thursday night at Orlando Health Stadium.

The fifth-ranked Titans dominated the time of possession against No. 11 Monroe College but neither team scored in a game that was broadcast locally on WEFS-TV.

After eight minutes the game was put on hold for over an hour due to storms but when the game resumed, the two sides each had some chances to score first. Eastern Florida State College is now 5-1-1 on the season seemed to get stronger as the match progressed.

Lea Monteiro made a couple of big slide tackles to save runs and Louise Featherstone had a good chance for Monroe College with 16 minutes left in the first half.

After halftime, Monroe College had one of the best chances of the game as Katherine Neves hit a shot from the left side from distance and it floated over goalkeeper Lauren Pastor and bounced off the post.

The Titans seemed to take control of things midway through the second half as Eastern Florida State College had several good chances to take the lead. With 22 minutes left, Laura Di Mascio was taken down right outside the box, but the Titans could not take advantage of the opportunity. With 17 minutes left, Sophia Posner had two good serves into the box, but the Monroe College defense was up to the task.

Eastern Florida State College is now 5-1-1 on the season and will travel to Rochester, NY next weekend for a couple of games. The Titans will play Genesee Community College Friday at 5 p.m. and then face host Monroe Community College Sunday at 11 a.m.

Monroe College is 6-1-1 and will stay in Florida, traveling to Daytona State College Sunday for a game against the Falcons.
