Women's soccer team remains unbeaten with win against Monroe College

The Eastern Florida State College women's soccer team remained unbeaten, defeating No. 6 Monroe College 4-1 Tuesday evening at Daytona State College.

The No. 1 ranked Titans improved to 6-0 with the victory and have now defeated three teams that were ranked in the top 10 when Eastern Florida State College played them this season.

The defending national champions got on the board with just over 28 minutes remaining in the first half as sophomore midfielder Laura Cetina hits a ball from outside the box that beat the goalkeeper to make it 1-0.

10 minutes later Cetina was taken down in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. The sophomore from Spain once again beat the goalkeeper and it was 2-0.

Monroe College would cut the lead in half with 11:07 remaining as they got behind the defense and skipped a ball past Gabriella Tobar. It was the only goal Tobar would allow on Tuesday.

With the clock running down in the first half, Kaily Dunne took a pass from way outside the box and rifled a shot into the upper corner to give the Titans a 3-1 lead at halftime.

The second half was a back and forth affair but no scoring until the 4:40 mark when Nancy Almanza's sliding shot went off the goal post, but to Samira Roper whose shot was stopped by the goalkeeper but the ball was hit out front where Almanza finished it to make it 4-1.

The Titans will open the Region 8 Conference season on October 1 against Daytona State College at Orlando Health Stadium at 7 p.m. The game will be shown live on WEFS-TV locally and online.
