Women's soccer team tops Daytona State in Region VIII opener

The fifth-ranked Eastern Florida State College women's soccer team opened the Region VIII Conference with a win on Saturday night at Daytona State College.

The Titans picked up the 3-2 win against Daytona State College to improve to 2-1-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

After a scoreless first half, the Titans finally broke through in the second half as Marthe Taugbol centered a ball that Laura Cetina settled to Paula Garrido who struck it into the back of the net with 18 minutes and 50 seconds remaining in the game.

A little over a minute later, Alexia Spencer made a nice cross to Garrido who made a run and stuck it in the net for her second goal of the night and third of the season.

With 8:16 remaining, Kurumi Arakawa blasted a shot past the goalkeeper to give the Titans a 3-0 lead.

But Daytona State College would strike back, scoring twice in a three-minute span to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Titans will host No. 8 Monroe College in a battle of top 10 teams in the nation at Orlando Health Stadium on the Melbourne campus. The game will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
