Women's soccer team opens Region 8 Tournament Thursday against Broward

The Eastern Florida State College women's soccer team heads into the Region 8 Tournament in a rematch of last season's Region 8 title game.

The Titans come into the tournament 10-0 overall and are the No. 1 seed in the tournament. They will face the Seahawks, who scored five times in the second half to defeat Polk State College 5-1 on Monday, in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Thursday night at Daytona State College.

Eastern Florida State College is 2-0 against Broward College this season and have won 17 in a row against the Seahawks heading into the matchup. In the first two games, sophomore Morgan Miller has scored five goals while freshman Francesca Espinoza has four goals.

Miller is second in Region 8 in scoring with 12 goals and has had a goal or an assist in 11 of the 12 games this season. Espinoza leads the region in assists with eight to go with her six goals. Defensively the Titans have allowed two goals this season as sophomore goalkeeper Kiera Gibson has seven shutouts this season and leads the region in goals-against average (0.20) and save percentage (.938).

"We are excited for the opportunity to play in the conference tournament," Eastern Florida State College women's soccer coach Jeff Carr said.  "Nothing we have done in the regular season matters at this point .  We need to be ready to compete and play at a high level."

No. 2 seed Daytona State College will play No. 3 seed ASA Miami at 7 p.m. Thursday with the finals scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at Daytona State College. The winner will advance to the Southeast District Tournament.
