Women's soccer team shuts out ASA Miami

The Eastern Florida State College women's soccer team scored twice in the final 20 minutes Saturday night to defeat ASA Miami in a Region 8 Conference matchup.

The No. 3-ranked Titans improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference with the 2-0 victory at Titan Soccer Complex.

The defenses shined in the first 70 minutes, holding the two best offenses in Region 8 in check. But with 21 minutes and 45 seconds remaining, Emily Bodi ran down a ball in the corner and found Paula Garrido in front of the goal. Garrido punched it into the lower corner of the goal to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. The goal was the third of the season for the freshman from Spain.

"She comes off the bench and adds a lot. She is a spark plug for us and did a nice job," Eastern Florida State College women's soccer coach Jeff Carr said.

A couple minutes later the Titans would earn a penalty kick and sophomore Morgan Miller buried it to give the Titans a 2-0 lead. It was Miller's fourth goal of the season.

"It was a battle, we had our opportunities in the first half. I thought we played well but we got better in the second half especially that last 20 minutes," Carr said. "We opened up, found the space, played the right paths. We did a good job tonight, I am pleased with the effort. Especially defensively, we were really able to shut them down."

The Titans have yet to allow a goal this season, tying a program record for five straight shutouts. Eastern Florida State College will host Polk State College Wednesday night in a Region 8 Conference matchup at 6 p.m. The team will honor its sophomores after the game and admission is free.
