No. 3 seed Laramie County Community College shuts out Moraine Valley
Laramie County Community College's Nikita Woods came into the tournament as one of the top scorers in Melbourne, Florida this week.
And on Monday afternoon she put on a show, scoring three times in the first 17 minutes and 32 seconds, helping the Golden Eagles beat Moraine Valley Community College 6-0 in a Pool C game in the first round of the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament. Woods now has 24 goals this season.
"Nikita has a knack for getting into position and when you give her a chance she will put it away," Laramie County Community College women's soccer coach Jim Gardner said.
Laramie County kept things rolling in the second half, scoring 12 minutes into the second half on a Katie Loken header.
Less than a minute later Laramie County goalkeeper Kelly Morine made one of her two saves and it was a big one, stopping a breakaway from Moraine Valley Community College.
"We kind of got beat there but Kelly did a great job coming off her line and being right there and making a nice save," Gardner said.
Taylor Stoeger made it 5-0 in the 66th minute and Natalie De Marco hit a shot from 20 yards out with just over two minutes left in the game to round out the scoring for Laramie County Community College who will face ASA Brooklyn at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
"They are low in numbers but they have some tough, dynamic players up front and they can score," Gardner said of ASA Brooklyn. "We will have to play solid defense, pressure cover and be calm. And we are also going to have to attack and press them. I think we will have our work cut out for us."
But first ASA Brooklyn will have to face Moraine Valley Community College at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
