A look at the field for NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament

A look at the 12 teams that will compete for the NJCAA Division I Women's Soccer National Championship Tournament that begins Monday at Titan Soccer Complex on the Eastern Florida State College Melbourne campus:

 

PHOENIX COLLEGE

Record: 21-0-1

Location: Encanto Village, Phoenix

Nickname: Bears

Seed: No. 1 out of Region 1

Pool: A, will face No. 12 Georgia Military at 10 a.m. Monday and No. 8 Lewis & Clark at 10 a.m. Wednesday

Tournament history: First appearance in national tournament

Players to watch: Eliudth Gonzalez (31 goals) and Laura Figueroa (22 goals) have combined to score 53 of team's 105 goals.

What to know: Has outscored opponents 28-2 in last five games heading into tournament. Team is third in goals scored with 105 this season. Goalkeeper Esthefanny Barreras helped Eastern Florida State College reach national tournament final in 2015.

 

TYLER JUNIOR COLLEGE

Record: 20-1-0

Location: Tyler, Texas

Nickname: Apaches

Seed: No. 2 out of Region 14

Pool: B, will face No. 11 Cloud County at 12:30 p.m. Monday and No. 7 Harford Community College at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday

Tournament history: Made it to the national tournament championship game last season and has won the title in 2009 and 2011.

Players to watch: Jullia Trabach leads the team with 15 goals while Itzayanna Sanchez-Gracia has 11 goals and 11 assists.

What to know: 2-0 against teams in the tournament this season. Has scored at least three goals in 14 of the 21 games this season and is fourth in the country with 12 shutouts.

 

LARAMIE COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Record: 16-1-0

Location: Cheyenne, Wyoming

Nickname: Golden Eagles

Seed: No. 3 out of Region 9

Pool: C, will face No. 10 Moraine Valley at 3 p.m. Tuesday and No. 6 ASA Brooklyn at 3 p.m. Wednesday

Tournament history: Is making third straight trip to the national tournament.

Players to watch: Goalkeeper Ellie Bowman has allowed four goals in 12 games this season while Nikita Woods (21 goals, 10 assists) and Taylor Stoeger (18 goals and 18 assists) lead the offense.

What to know: Laramie County comes into the tournament on a 12-game win streak and has not allowed more than one goal in any game this season and five total for the season.

 

EASTERN FLORIDA STATE COLLEGE

Record: 11-2-0

Location: Melbourne, FL

Nickname: Titans

Seed: No. 4 out of Region 8

Pool: D, will face No. 9 Iowa Western at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and No. 5 Schoolcraft College at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday

Tournament history: Making sixth straight trip to national tournament, finished runner-up in 2015.

Players to watch: Midfielder Katie Lockwood led Region 8 with 16 goals and also had 11 assists this season. Teammate Nathali Da Silva comes into the tournament with 15 goals and 12 assists.

What to know: The Titans have been in the national tournament six straight seasons and reached the championship in 2015. They have won seven of last eight matches.

  

SCHOOLCRAFT COLLEGE

Record: 13-0-1

Location: Livonia, Michigan

Seed: No. 5 out of Region 12

Pool: D, will face No. 9 Iowa Western at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and No. 4 Eastern Florida State College at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday

Tournament history: Making third straight appearance in national tournament and won the title in 1987.

Player to watch: Jamila Thombs has scored 19 goals in 14 games this season

What to know: Has shut out opponent in five straight games and has allowed five goals all season. Has won seven straight games.

 

ASA BROOKLYN

Record: 11-0

Location: New York City

Nickname: Avengers

Seed: No. 6 out of Region 15

Pool: C, will face No. 10 Moraine Valley at 3 p.m. Tuesday and No. 3 Laramie County at 3 p.m. Wednesday

Tournament history: First appearance in the national tournament

Players to watch: Tamara Queiroz and Estelle Badoadana lead the team on offense

What to know: Has not allowed more than one goal in any game this season.

 

HARFORD COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Record: 18-1-0

Location: Churchville, Maryland

Nickname: Fighting Owls

Seed: No. 7 out of Region 20

Pool: C, will face No. 11 Cloud County at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday and No. 2 Tyler Junior College at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday

Tournament history: Was in the national tournament three years ago

Players to watch: Crystal Kline has recorded 15 shutouts this season and offensively Rachel Bohli leads a potent offense with 26 goals

What to know: The Fighting Owls have four players with at least 20 goals this season as they are No. 1 in the country in goals scored this season and average 7.26 goals per game.

 

LEWIS & CLARK COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Record: 17-2-0

Location: Godfrey, Illinois

Nickname: Trailblazers

Seed: No. 8 out of Region 24

Pool: A, will face No. 12 Georgia Military at 10 a.m. Tuesday and No. 1 Phoenix at 10 a.m. Wednesday

Tournament history: Was in the tournament in 2015 and won national championships in 1999 and 2008.

Players to watch: Goalkeeper Katie Hudson has allowed five goals in 15 starts this season while Audrey Andrzejewski comes into the tournament with 29 goals and 16 assists.

What to know: Started season 13-0, then lost two in a row, including Schoolcraft who is also in tourney. Since then they have won four in a row, outscoring opponents 18-3

 

IOWA WESTERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Record: 12-5-0

Location: Council Bluffs, Iowa

Nickname: Reivers

Seed: No. 9 out of Region 11

Pool: C, will face No. 4 Eastern Florida State College at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and No. 5 Schoolcraft College at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday

Tournament history: Back in the national tournament for second straight year and won title in 2013 and was runner-up in 2006, 2007 and 2014.

Players to watch: Laura Chavez has 16 assists this season which is tied for 11th in the nation.

What to know: The Reivers advanced to the national tournament by beating Indian Hills in penalty kicks. It is the eighth time Iowa Western has made it to the national tournament. After starting the season 0-5, the Reivers have not lost again this season.

 

MORAINE VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Record: 17-0-0

Location: Palos Hills, Illinois

Nickname: Cyclones

Seed: No. 10 out of Region 4

Pool: C, will face No. 3 Laramie County at 3 p.m. Tuesday and No. 6 ASA Brooklyn at 3 p.m. Wednesday

Tournament history: Making third straight appearance in the national tournament

Players to watch: Goalkeeper Grace Rollins has played in 16 of the 17 matches this season and has seven shutouts, six coming in the past seven games. Offensively, Brooke Janeczek has moved from defense to the front and scored 29 goals this season.

What to know: Moraine Valley is back for the third time but this may be the best team coming to Melbourne yet. Defensively, they have given up six goals in past 10 games, outscoring opponents 61-6 in those games.

 

CLOUD COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Record: 15-3-0

Location: Concordia, Kansas

Nickname: T-Birds

Seed: No. 11 out of Region 6

Pool: C, will face No. 2 Tyler Junior College at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday and No. 7 Harford at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday

Tournament history: First appearance in the national tournament

Players to watch: Joana Villanova leads the team with 15 goals while teammate Angie Vergara has 11 goals and 12 assists.

What to know: Program is back after a couple of years without a team and won second Region 6 title in school history to qualify. Has won nine straight games heading into tourney.

 

GEORGIA MILITARY COLLEGE

Record: 14-2-1

Location: Milledgeville, Georgia

Nickname: Bulldogs

Seed: No. 12 out of Region 17

Pool: A, will face No. 1 Phoenix at 10 a.m. Monday and No. 8 Lewis & Clark at 10 a.m. Tuesday

Tournament history: First appearance in the national tournament

Player to watch: Adisa Nwawel leads the country in goals scored with 37 and is the GCAA Player of the Year. Teammate Alison Rugel has 15 assists to go with 11 goals.

What to know: The 14 wins is a program record and is unbeaten on the road this season, 6-0-1.
