Women's soccer team shuts out Monroe College

The Eastern Florida State College women's soccer team scored twice in the second half to post a 2-0 win over Monroe College Friday night at Titan Soccer Complex.

After a scoreless first half, it was the Titans defense that shined the first 15 minutes of the second half, holding off a Monroe College team that came out very aggressive.

With 27 minutes and 19 seconds remaining in the game, sophomore Nathali Da Silva lined up a free kick outside the far corner of the box and drilled a perfect ball into the top right corner of the net that Da Silva said teammate Katie Lockwood told her to cross but she decided to take the chance and shoot.

"Nobody is stopping that," Eastern Florida State College women's soccer coach Jeff Carr said. "Anytime Nat or Katie have the ball they have the nod to go for it, they are special players and that was a fantastic finish, one of the nicest finishes on a set piece that I have seen in women's soccer."

It would remain 1-0 until Lockwood hit a corner kick to the middle of the field, right to Juna Suppan who took a shot that the keeper could not catch. Suppan followed her shot and made a nice cross to a wide open Klesha Darroux who dispatched it into the back of the net.

"It is a rivalry because of the national tournament meetings and it was great to have them come down and they played a great game tonight," said Carr who is now 2-0-1 against Monroe College in his career at EFSC. "It felt like a national tournament game, it was really intense out there. Both teams played really hard. Our back four was tremendous tonight."

The Titans will host Broward College in a Region 8 Conference game Monday night at 6 p.m. The game will be shown live on WEFS-TV and online at efsctitans.com/webcast
