Women's soccer team opens season with win

A couple of freshmen made strong statements in their Eastern Florida State College debut, leading the Titans to an 8-0 victory over Southwestern Illinois at Titan Soccer Complex Friday afternoon.

Freshman Cristina Garriga scored the first of her three goals with about three minutes left in the first half, heading a ball from teammate Kelsey Kiely to put the Titans on the board.

"I am very happy because the preseason wasn't good for me, I didn't score at all so I am happy I could help the team get this win," Garriga said. "It is a good beginning for us and I hope we can continue."

The second half belonged to the Titans who would score seven times as five different players found the back of the net.

"Everyone played that was healthy and one of the things that thrilled me was seeing Jaime (Farls) back on the field," Eastern Florida State College women's soccer coach Jeff Carr said. "We were very sluggish in the first half, we didn't take care of the ball. In the second half we said we had to be better and we were."

Freshman Klesha Darroux scored twice in that second half and McCall Leduc also had her first goal as a Titan.

Sophomore Katie Lockwood got the second half started, tapping in a ball from Sarah Chamales two minutes into the second half. Meghan Dees found Garrigas who finished for her second goal three minutes later and the Titans were up 3-0 in the first five minutes of the second half.

With 17 seconds remaining in the match, Chamales scored her first goal as a Titan to make it 8-0.

In the first game of the day, No. 11 Daytona State College defeated No. 12 Johnson County Community College 4-0.

The Titans will play Johnson County at 6 p.m. Sunday in a game that will be broadcast on WEFS-TV live on WEFS-TV and streamed live at www.efsctitans.com/webcast
