Women's golf team battles Seminole State in match play event

The Eastern Florida State College women's golf team faced Seminole State College in a battle of top five teams in the country on Friday.

Seminole State came away with the match play victory, 5-2 at Mayfair Country Club in Sanford.

Eastern Florida State College's Savannah Hawthorne picked up a win and both Gabrielle Fernandez and Kira Shellman halved in the match.

Seminole State College is the defending national champions and have won three straight titles.

"It was a good day of competition for the team, most of the matches were tight right down to the wire," Eastern Florida State College women's golf coach Jamie Howell said. "We are looking into possibly making this an annual event similar to the Solheim Cup on the LPGA."

The match play event was the final fall event for the women's golf team who will now prepare for the spring season.
