Women's golf team ready to tee off on Saturday

The Eastern Florida State College women's golf team will open the fall season Saturday at the Seminole State Fall Warm Up in Sanford.

The Titans, who went to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament for the first time and placed sixth overall, have a strong nucleus back from last year's team as they open the fall season.

"So far we have shot lower in all three rounds of qualifying than we did all of last year with the exception of one round. The team is better, the team is deeper and while I don't know that we have a super star, we have more depth than we have ever had," Eastern Florida State College women's golf coach Jamie Howell said. "You want to play with Seminole State, they are still the best team in the country until someone unseats them. I want the girls to play the best teams and in the best tournaments."

Sophomores Gabrielle Fernandez, Morela Boyd, Savannah Hawthorne, Kira Shellman and Jasmine Yang are all back from that team that made history and the group has added a couple of strong freshmen to the mix this season.

"Gabby and Savannah are both playing better than last year. I look for continued improvement from all of them this year," Howell said. "Our two freshmen have really stepped right up and embraced playing on a team."

The Titans will tee off Saturday morning for the first day of the two-day event in Sanford.
