Women's golf team in third place at District 5 Championship

The Eastern Florida State College women's golf team had a solid first round at the District 5 Championships Monday at Duran Golf Club.

The Titans shot a round of 312 and is in third place overall heading into Tuesday's final round. The champion will advance to the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament.

Gabrielle Fernandez shot a 75 and is in seventh place overall while teammate Morela Boyd finished with a 78 and is in 11th place. Jasmine Yang shot a 79 and is tied for 12th while Savannah Hawthorne is in 14th place after shooting an 80. Delia Timpy finished with an 86.

"We improved by 18 shots over the last round in Georgia last week and I told the ladies, the first thing to look at is how much better we shot than last week. It is nice to be home and sleep in our own beds, but we did better today and all they wanted to talk about was how many shots they left out there so the drive and competition is there, we have to do a better job tomorrow," Eastern Florida State College women's golf coach Jamie Howell said. "I polled the coaches about how we set up the course, we didn't set it up overly difficult or really easy, but we made it playable and the scores tell me the course is set up the right way. The good teams are playing well but nobody is running away with it."

Seminole State College is leading the tournament after a first round. Minori Nagano shot a 4-under 68 to lead the tournament. Daytona State College is three strokes behind as Briana Gabe shot a 1-under 71.

The final round of the tournament will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday at Duran Golf Club.
