Women's basketball team tops Florida Southwestern

The Eastern Florida State College women's basketball team won their 24th straight game at Titan Field House on Saturday afternoon.

The No. 22 ranked Titans defeated Florida Southwestern 58-55 to improve to 10-3 overall and 5-0 in the Citrus Conference.

Eastern Florida State College has now won 29 straight conference games and nine in a row this season.

The Titans trailed for much of the first quarter, but Lynn Rieth hit a basket with three minutes and 22 seconds left that started an 13-0 run and gave the Titans a 19-11 lead after the first quarter.

The Titans would keep the lead until Florida Southwestern went on a run of its own in the final two minutes of the second quarter. The Bucs would score the final 13 points to head to the locker room with a 35-30 lead.

The lead would not last long in the third quarter as Amelia Hassett and E'Zaria Adams would each make baskets to close the lead and Kristiana Kulackovska would tie things up, 36-36.

Adams would continue to score for the Titans including a free throw to give the Titans a 45-44 lead after three quarters. Adams finished with seven points in the quarter and nine in the game.

Midway through the fourth quarter the Titans lead would hit 10 on a Rosa Redondo Sorribes basket. Hassett would make it a 12-point game before Florida Southwestern would go on one final run to cut it to three points in the final minute.

But the Titans held on to post the win and remain in first place in the conference.

Hassett finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds for her ninth straight double-double and 11th of the season. Jaidyn Koerdt had nine points in the game while Kulackovska and Rieth each had eight points.

Kiana Wilson had 13 points for Florida Southwestern, who fell to 3-2 in the conference and 7-6 on the season.

Eastern Florida State College will be on the road for conference games at St. Petersburg College Wednesday and then Santa Fe on Saturday before returning to Titan Field House on Jan. 17 against Indian River State College.
