Women's basketball team recognized by Board of Trustees

The Eastern Florida State College women's basketball team was honored during the April Board of Trustees meeting on Monday.

The team captured the Region VIII championship for the first time in program history, defeating Santa Fe in the quarterfinals, Indian River State College in the semifinals and the eventual national champion Northwest Florida State College for the title. It marked the first time in 25 years that a team outside the Panhandle has won the championship.

Eastern Florida State College's Associate Vice President of Athletics Jeff Carr recognized the team during the trustees meeting, saying how proud the administration is of the team and the progress that the program has made over the past couple of seasons.

Sophomore guard Leilani Guion was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament, averaging 12.3 points in the three games. Elli Garnett, L'or Eyeba Mputu, Shadaria Smith were also named to the all-tournament team and head coach MJ Baker was named the Roonie Scovel Award, recognizing the FCSAA Coach of the Year.

Eastern Florida State College won the Central Conference for the second straight season, going a perfect 12-0 in conference games and entered the NJCAA Division I National Tournament 31-1.

The title gave them an automatic bid to the national tournament and the No. 2 seed which was the first time the program has been seeded in the top eight and received a bye in the first round.

The Titans reached the semifinals of the national tournament for the first time in program history and finished with a school-record 33 wins.

The sophomore class leaves Eastern Florida State College with a 61-7 record and have been to the national tournament in each of the past two seasons.
