Women's basketball team tops FSC-Jacksonville, honors sophomores

The Eastern Florida State College women's basketball team scored the first 18 points and cruised to victory in the final game of the regular season on Saturday at Titan Field House.

The second-ranked Titans improved to 28-1 overall and finished the Central Conference 12-0 with the 88-36 win over the Florida State College at Jacksonville.

Eight players scored in the first quarter as Eastern Florida State College held a 30-11 lead after the first quarter and 56-14 at the half.

The win was the 21st straight for the women's basketball program at Titan Field House who wrapped up their second straight unbeaten conference title.

The six sophomores were honored at halftime of the game as guards Shadaria Smith, Hanna Mebius-Svensson, Elli Garnett, Madlena Irena Gerke and Leilani Guion as well as L'or Eyeba played in their final game at Titan Field House Saturday.

Freshman Sarae Beveridge hit four 3-pointers and finished with a season-high 16 points while teammate Amelia Hassett scored 13 points. Mputu had 12 points, scoring six in the first quarter. Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu had 11 points and nine rebounds while Madlena Irena Gerke finished with 10 points.

The Titans ended a busy day at Titan Field House by cutting down the nets and celebrating their second straight Central Conference title.

The women's basketball team will advance to the Region VIII Tournament March 8 in Niceville.
