Women's basketball team defeats Santa Fe in conference opener

The Eastern Florida State College women's basketball team used a big second half to defeat Santa Fe in a Central Conference game Wednesday.

The No.6-ranked Titans improved to 17-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference with the 84-62 victory on the road.

The Saints came out shooting in the first quarter and grabbed an early 10-2 lead. The lead would reach 12 a couple of times in the quarter, but a Leilani Guion 3-pointer cut the Saints lead to nine after one quarter.

A 7-0 run to start the second quarter cut the lead to two points but the Saints would keep the lead with some key 3-pointers and the lead would once again reach nine behind Isabella Reynolds.

But the Titans would finish the second quarter on a 13-0 run including a Guion basket that gave the Titans its first lead with 1:22 remaining. The Titans would head into the locker room with a 45-41 lead.

Eastern Florida State College came out in the third quarter making the first eight points and would outscore the Saints 18-5 in the third quarter to take control.

L'or Eyeba Mputu finished with a season-high 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds as four players scored in double figures in the win. Guion finished with 15 points and 10 assists, while Madlena Gerke had 13 and Amelia Hassett added 12 points.

Reynolds finished with 21 points for the Saints who fall to 0-2 in the conference.

Eastern Florida State College will be at home for a Central Conference game against Daytona State College at 2 p.m. Saturday. It will be the conference home opener for the Titans who are the defending conference champions. Admission is free to Titan Field House.
