Women's basketball team defeats Georgia Highlands in Niceville

The Eastern Florida State College women's basketball team remained unbeaten Friday, defeating Georgia Highlands in Niceville.

The fourth-ranked Titans, who improved to 12-0 on the season, beat Georgia Highlands 72-53 Friday afternoon at Northwest Florida State College.

Eastern Florida State College led from the start as Amelia Hassett hit a 3-pointer to open the game and with 4:28 remaining in the first quarter, the Titans had a 10-point lead as Shadaria Smith's 3-pointer gave Eastern Florida State College a 15-5 lead.

The Titans would lead by nine points after one quarter, but Georgia Highlands cut the lead to four points early in the second quarter. It was as close as they would get as Madlena Irena Gerke made a 3-pointer, then stole the ball and found an open Hassett for a breakaway. After a stop, Gerke hit another basket and the lead was back to 11 points, leading 28-17. The Titans went into the locker room at halftime leading by 15 points.

A couple of baskets late in the fourth quarter by L'or Eyeba Mputu gave the Titans a 20-point lead but ended up with the 19-point win.

Mputu led the offensive attack with 17 points while Gerke, Hassett and Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu each had 11 points.

The Titans will be back in action Saturday at 1 p.m. EST when they take the court against Monroe College in Niceville.
