Women's basketball team to play in Santa Fe tournament

The Eastern Florida State College women's basketball team will head to Gainesville this weekend for the Best Western Gateway Grand Classic hosted by Santa Fe College.

The No. 13-ranked Titans are 4-0 heading into the tournament and will open the weekend Friday at 5 p.m. against No. 18 Florida Southwestern. The Bucs come into the contest 4-1 and are led by Macarena Retamales who is averaging 16 points per game. Florida Southwestern has three players averaging at least 11 points per game this season.

Eastern Florida State College also has three players averaging at least 10 points per game as freshman Amelia Hassett is coming off a couple of big games and is the Orlando Health Student-Athlete of the Week.

Shadaria Smith and Isimenme Ozzy Momodu are both also averaging 10 points per game.

On Saturday the Titans will play Miami Dade at noon. Miami Dade is off to a slow start, but Jaye Nelson is among one of the leading scorers in Region 8, averaging 17.3 points per game.
