Women's basketball team opens conference season on road Saturday

The Eastern Florida State College women's basketball team will hit the road on Saturday, opening conference play at St. Petersburg.

The Titans are 10-8 overall and finished second in the Suncoast Conference last season and made a run to the championship game of the state tournament.

St. Petersburg comes into the game 10-9 overall and is 0-1 in the conference after losing to defending conference champion Florida Southwestern last Saturday.

The teams have split the past 14 meetings with each side winning seven times, but the Titans won two of the three last season.

"The Sun Coast Conference is extremely competitive and very well coached with lots of talent. Playing on the road this weekend against a talented St. Pete team will be a great opportunity to show how our tough preseason schedule has prepared us," Eastern Florida State College women's basketball coach MJ Baker said. "This year's team has been defined by perseverance with the will to step up and adapt based on the injuries we have faced and growing pains we have pushed through. We are an extremely young team and have played one of the toughest preseason road schedules in the country. We are excited to see those lessons be put to the test in conference."

The Titans will be back at Titan Field House Wednesday, Jan. 16, taking the court at 5:30 p.m. against Hillsborough Community College. Admission is free to games at Titan Field House.
