Women's basketball team opens regular season on Friday

The Eastern Florida State College women's basketball team is back on the court and opens the regular season this weekend.

The Titans are coming off a 24-win season and made the FCSAA State Tournament Championship Game for the first time in head coach MJ Baker's first season.

"I feel like last year kind of catapulted us into this year. We are building the foundation of what the culture and our family is based on," Baker said. "Last year did a great job of letting us know what is possible. It came a lot quicker than a lot of us expected because we had such a special group."

The team has a new look from that season as Angeni Worley, Embla Andersson and Ragene Grier are the only three that played in games last season.

"We will lean a lot on our returning players, especially early this season but I feel like this team has a chip on their shoulder and I feel like we have another group of amazing and empowered players that want to carry that torch," Baker said.

The Titans have a good mix of transfers and freshmen added to the nucleus from last season to make up a versatile team ready to compete in a tough Suncoast Conference.

"They are probably the most talented group I have ever coached and that is saying something because I have had some really talented teams," Baker said. "They are really talented but the thing is talent can get beat if they don't work hard. This group wants to get better, we are just consistently trying to get better every day."

The team will open the season on Friday at the Indian River Tip-Off Classic against Palm Beach State College and then play the host Indian River State College on Saturday. The home opener will be Nov. 13 against ASA Miami at 6 p.m.

"It is really exciting to get started, I feel like we are ready to step up where we left off last year," sophomore Angeni Worley said. "We have to keep working but it is exciting to see how good we can be."
