Titan women's basketball team opens with big win

Eastern Florida State College sophomore Trudy Walker was not surprised by the women's basketball team's performance in the season opener Wednesday night.

After all, she has seen this freshmen group get comfortable in practice so it was no surprise that they performed well in the team's 106-48 win over Webber International JV at Titan Field House.

"They were amazing, but that wasn't a surprise. Every day we practice hard and we have a lot of gym rats. The freshmen are go-getters and have a lot of want-to. It is exciting," said Walker who had a game-high 22 points to go with six rebounds.

While Walker and fellow sophomores Dysheka Price (15 points) and Tayler Smith (13 points, eight rebounds) led the attack, the freshmen came up big as well.

Guards Sherae Cherafant had 12 points and 12 assists and Caitlyn Smith finished with 13 points, all in the second half. Evey Sagner finished with 11 points in the game.

"The freshmen were great tonight and I have been pleased with their progress but you don't know until the lights came on and they all performed very well," Eastern Florida State College women's basketball coach Jim Grimes said. "I thought we were unselfish, we played with our principles and the things we preach were evident. I love that they want to learn, all of them are very coachable, teachable during the heat of the game. It is a great start."

While it was a great start, it is just that for the Titans who will host St. Petersburg Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

"Love the start, but back to work tomorrow," Grimes said. "Every game is going to be tougher than the one before, we know that, and St. Pete is going to be a very tough test for us."
