Titan women's basketball team ready to tip off new season

The Eastern Florida State College women's basketball team has a lot of new faces heading into Wednesday's home opener.

With nine freshman and 10 new players on the roster as well as three new assistant coaches, the team has been working hard to get ready for the new season.

"Everything is new to them, all of our system and philosophies are brand new so that has taken more time this season," Eastern Florida State College women's basketball coach Jim Grimes said. "But we feel like it has been really good and we are ahead of schedule. I couldn't be more pleased with the development of our freshmen so far."

The team will lean on Trudy Walker, who averaged 9.6 points and 9.4 rebounds last season as the team won 20 games and claimed its second straight Southern Conference Championship. Dysheka Price came off the bench last season and averaged five points per game. Add in Tayler Smith, a transfer from Kennesaw State where she played 22 games last season.

"We are a new team but we have great chemistry, and have had from Day 1," Walker said. "The chemistry this season is so unique and it has been great and I think it will be like that all season."

The team will host 13 games this season including some tough games in the month of November as Santa Fe College, Chipola and College of Central Florida all come to Titan Field House.

But coach Grimes believes if the team plays within their principles, the team will be competing for another conference title.

"Our main goal every day is to get better. We talk about playing tough, playing hard, playing smart and playing together. That is our Titan Four. Those are the principles we preach every day and we believe if we do those four things well, the rest will take care of itself," Grimes said.

It begins Wednesday night as Webber International JV comes to Titan Field House to tip off the new season. Game s begins at 6 p.m. and admission is free.
