Johnson Named All-State; Walker Receives All-Tournament Honor

Eastern Florida women's basketball point guard Nene Johnson was honored Saturday night with selection to the All-Region 8 first team.

The award was presented on the final night of the NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Tournament at the College of Central Florida in Ocala.

Johnson is the second Titan to be so honored in the past two seasons. Sophomore guard Jessica Doyle, now playing at NCAA Division II Armstrong State in Georgia, was an All-Region first team pick in 2015.

Johnson, from Stuart, Florida and Martin County High, led the Titans in scoring at 14.3 points per game and in assists at six per game. She was an All-Southern Conference first-team selection this season. She will continuer her playing career at NCAA Division I Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Also on Saturday, Eastern Florida freshman forward Trudy Walker was named to the Region 8/FCSAA All-Tournament team.

Walker, from Fort Pierce, Florida and Westwood High, scored a team-high 12 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in the Titans quarterfinal loss to Chipola College.

"Nene is well deserving of this honor," said Eastern Florida head coach Jim Grimes. "She is a great player.  I can't say enough about the transformation she has helped bring about in this program. I will obviously hate to see her go but our loss will be Liberty's gain.

"Trudy has made so much progress as the season has gone on. I am so proud of her but this is only the beginning for Trudy. With her character and work ethic, there is no telling how good she is going to become. I am blessed to be her coach."

The Titans won their second straight Southern Conference championship, qualifying for the Region 8 Tournament for the second straight time.

They finished the season at 20-10 giving Grimes his second straight 20-win season in his three seasons.
