Softball team sweeps Santa Fe College Thursday

The Eastern Florida State College softball team picked up a pair of wins against No. 19 Santa Fe College Thursday afternoon at Titan Softball Complex.

The Titans, who are now 13-11 in the Citrus Conference, defeated the Saints 4-1 in the first game and then 5-1 in the second game.

In Game 1, Avery Velazquez allowed one hit over seven innings and retired 17 hitters in a row during the dominating victory. Velazquez allowed one unearned run and struck out two in the win.

The Titans would score in the bottom of the first inning as Isabel Otero singled and scored on a double by Avery Velazquez. Eastern Florida State College would add a run in the third inning as Aracelis Jimenez singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Velazquez.

Kayleigh Flaherty waked and scored in the fifth inning and Otero had an infield single and scored to make it 4-0.

The Saints scored a run in the seventh inning, but Avery Velazquez got the next two hitters out to end the game.

Avery Velazquez and Isabel Otero each had two hits in the win.

In Game 2 it was Luci Walters turn on the mound and was just as good as Velazquez, allowing one unearned run over seven innings. She struck out two and walked two in the win.

Up 1-0 in the third inning, Madison Velazquez hit a single driving in Otero and then Jimenez scored on on the throw to second. Jessica Merk and Ashley Corazzini both scored on an error to make it 5-0.

The Saints would score on an error in the fifth inning.

Jimenez finished with two of the team's six hits.

 It was their second straight sweep against a nationally-ranked team and will travel to the College of Central Florida on Saturday for a conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
