Softball falls short against Daytona State College

The Eastern Florida State College softball team lost a pair of games to Daytona State College in a battle of top 20 teams in the nation Tuesday at Titan Softball Complex.

The Titans, who are ranked 18th in the national poll, lost the first game 9-8 in 12 innings and then lost Game 2 6-3. Eastern Florida State College is now 4-4 in the conference.

In Game 1, the Titans took an 2-0 lead in the first and scored another run in the second, third and fourth innings to hold a 5-0 lead. Back-to-back doubles by Avery Velazquez and Madison Velazquez would score two more in the sixth as the Titans took a 7-0 lead.

But trailing 7-0 in the seventh inning, Daytona State College took advantage of an error and a couple of close plays to bat around and score seven times to send the game to extra innings.

Both teams would score a run in the 11th inning but Daytona State College would score in the 12th and the Titans could not get the run home in the bottom of the inning.

Avery Velazquez tossed all 12 innings suffering the loss for the Titans.

Daytona State College kept the momentum in Game 2, taking advantage of an error to score twice in the second inning and lead 3-0. The lead would reach 6-0 highlighted by a Veronica Puckett two-run double.

Eastern Florida State College scored twice in the bottom of the fourth as Madison Velazquez ripped a two-run double, scoring Ashley Corazzini and Avery Velazquez. The Titans would add a run in the fifth as Jessica Merk singled and scored on an Aracelis Jimenez single.

They would load the bases in the seventh but could not get the big hit to tie the game.

Eastern Florida State College will hot the road on Saturday, playing St. Petersburg College in a conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
