Softball team splits on Sophomore Day

The Eastern Florida State College softball team dominated the first game but could not hold on in the second game, splitting a doubleheader against St. Petersburg College Saturday at Titan Softball Complex.

The Titans, who are now 16-16 in the Citrus Conference and are in fifth place in the standings after Saturday's results.

Eastern Florida State College won the first game 7-1 as they took a commanding lead early.

In the bottom of the first inning, Livie Davis walked and Brooke Theisen singled. McKenzie Jewell put down a nice sacrifice bunt for the first out. Kyla Leppin then stepped up to the plate and hit an two-run single. Leppin advanced to second on the throw home and then scored on Jenna Borkey's single.

Up 3-0, the Titans added two more in the second inning as Faith Campos singled and scored on Davis' triple. Davis would then score on Theisen's groundout to make it 5-0.

Hannah Strickland was really good for the Titans, allowing seven hits and striking out seven over six innings, allowing the one run in the sixth.

Alanna O'Brien pitched a scoreless seventh to lock up the win. Davis scored three times while Leppin and Theisen each had two hits.

In Game 2, the Titans would open with two runs in the first inning. With two outs, Jewell was hit by a pitch and Leppin singled. Both would score on Madison Ford's single.

It would remain 2-0 until the fourth inning when St. Petersburg scored once but O'Brien came in to get out of the jam.

It remained 2-1 until the top of the seventh. St. Petersburg would score six times, hitting seven singles and had a couple of walks.

The Titans threatened in the bottom of the seventh but could not come back.

Eastern Florida State College will host Miami Dade in a key Citrus Conference doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 3 p.m. The games will be broadcast locally on WEFS-TV, channel 9 or 455 on Spectrum, 68 on DirecTV, 30 on Dish and 68 on AT&T Uverse.
