Softball team splits doubleheader with St. Petersburg

The Eastern Florida State College softball team came back in the second game to earn a split in a Citrus Conference doubleheader at St. Petersburg College.

The Titans, who are now 8-8 in the conference, lost a tight game 3-2 in 10 innings and then held on in the second game as Faith Campos made a huge throw to preserve the Titans 4-3 win.

In Game 1, the Titans took an early lead by St. Petersburg would tie it up in the fifth on a home run by Mya Platt.

It would remain tied until the bottom of the 10th inning when Platt singled with a runner at second.

Kyla Leppin, Maci Vonderstrasse and Madison Ford each had two hits for the Titans.

In Game 2, the Titans broke a tie in the top of the seventh inning as Jenna Borkey hit a sacrifice fly that scored pinch runner Ashley Corazzini.

Up 4-3, St. Petersburg College tried to tie the game on a single but Campos threw a strike to catcher Ford who started a run down that resulted in the final out of the game.

Vonderstrasse had three hits in the game while McKenzie Jewell and Livie Davis each had two hits.

Alanna O'Brien picked up the win, tossing 4 2/3 shutout innings.

Eastern Florida State College will travel to Miami Dade College for a doubleheader against the Sharks on Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m.
