Softball team sweeps Polk State in conference doubleheader

The Eastern Florida State College softball team swept Polk State College in a Citrus Conference doubleheader on the road Tuesday.

The 19th ranked Titans won 5-1 and 4-0 to improve to 5-7 in the conference and 20-8 overall. The 20 wins eclipses last year's win total for the Titans.

In Game 1, Hannah Strickland was once again really strong, allowing one unearned run with five strikeouts over 5 and 1/3 innings. Alanna O'Brien came into the game with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth inning and tossed 1 2/3 innings without allowing a hit for the save.

Brooke Theisen had a two-run single in the fifth inning to make it 3-0 and then Theisen later scored on Kyla Leppin's sacrifice fly.

The Titans added a run in the sixth inning on Maci Vonderstrasse's solo home run. It was Vonderstrasse's first home run of the season.

Theisen had three hits in the game and Vonderstrasse went 2-for-3.

In Game 2, O'Brien took the ball and allowed four hits over six shutout innings but got into a jam in the seventh inning. With two on and nobody out, Luci Walters came in and got out of the jam to pick up the save.

While O'Brien was putting up zeroes, the Titans got on the board in the second inning as Marisa Shoudt hit an RBI single in the second inning and then Kyla Leppin ripped an RBI double in the third to make it 2-0. Leppin would later score on Jenna Borkey's single to make it 3-0.

Shoudt would once again drive in a run in the sixth inning.

The Titans had 10 hits in the game as Leppin, Shoudt, Borkey and Livie Davis each had two hits.

Eastern Florida State College will host Hillsborough Community College in a conference doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 2 p.m. Admission to games at Titan Softball Complex is free.
