Softball team splits with Miami Dade

The Eastern Florida State College softball team split a Southern Conference doubleheader with Miami Dade College Wednesday at Titan Softball Complex.

The Titans opened the day with a 4-3 victory over Miami Dade and then a late-game rally fell short in a 6-4 loss in Game 2.

The Titans came out swinging in the first inning as Rachel Lamoureaux and Ava Bassani both hit singles and would score on Makenzie Fore's big hit. Miami Dade would tie the game in the top of the second inning, but Eastern Florida State College would add another run in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead when Marisa Shoudt would walk and score on Trinity Howard's single.

Up 3-2 in the third inning, Bassani would single and score on a bases loaded walk by Shoudt.

From there Mandy Hedetniemi-Taylor kept Miami Dade in check as she would strike out four hitters in the win.

Howard had three hits in the game while Fore had two and Bassani scored twice.

In Game 2, Miami Dade would score three runs in the first two innings and added another to take a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Eastern Florida State College would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning as Sam Clark reached on an error and scored on Hedetniemi-Taylor's single.

It remained 4-1 until the seventh inning when the Sharks took advantage of an error to score two runs – they would end up being the winning runs because Eastern Florida State College made things close in the bottom of the seventh inning.

With one out, Lamoureaux singled and scored on Clark's RBI double. Clark would score on Bassani's RBI single and then Bassani scored on Shoudt's single to make it 6-4.

But with two runners on, the Sharks would get the final out of the game.

Eastern Florida State College will travel to Bradenton for a pair of games on Friday. The Titans will play then State College of Florida Manatee at 1 p.m. and then face No. 1 Florida Southwestern at 3 p.m.
