Softball team sweeps Daytona State College

The Eastern Florida State College softball team swept a doubleheader with Daytona State College Saturday afternoon at Titan Softball Complex.

The Titans came back to win Game 1 9-8 and then shut out Daytona State 5-0 in Game 2 to win their third straight game.

Eastern Florida State College scored five runs in the bottom of the first innings, highlighted by a Gracie Snell two-run double. Trinity Howard would steal home in the second inning to give the Titans a 6-1 lead.

But Daytona State College would score six times to take a 7-6 lead in the third inning. They would add one more run in the fourth for an 8-6 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Titans would tie the game as Faith Campos and Snell each singled. Both would score on errors and the game was tied. With Marisa Shoudt at third base, Makenzie Fore came to the plate. Fore hit a 1-1 pitch for a single that scored Shoudt and gave the Titans a 9-8 lead.

Destinly Lake picked up the win in relief and then Mandy Hedetniemi-Taylor came into the game in the sixth and tossed two scoreless innings for the save. Campos, Snell and Rachel Lamoureaux each had two hits in the game.

In Game 2, Hedetniemi-Taylor got the start and tossed her second straight shutout, striking out a  season-high 11 hitters in seven shutout innings.

Hedetniemi-Taylor allowed just five hits in the 5-0 win.

Ava Bassani singled, scoring Fore in the first inning as the Titans took a 1-0 lead. They would add a run in the second inning as Fore had a sacrifice fly, scoring Snell. Snell would hit a single in the third inning that scored Campos and the Titans were up 3-0.

In the fifth inning, the Titans would add two more runs.

Snell finished 3-for-3 with two RBI while Trinity Howard and Ava Bassani each had two hits in the win.

Eastern Florida State College will travel to St. Johns River for a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m. They will return to Titan Softball Complex on Friday, hosting South Florida State College at 1 p.m.
