Softball team splits doubleheader with Miami Dade

The Eastern Florida State College softball team split a doubleheader with Miami Dade College Saturday at Titan Softball Complex.

The Titans, who eclipsed last year's win total with a 7-3 win in Game 1, fell 8-4 in the second game.

In Game 1, an error in the third inning led to three runs as Kayla Domon, Brooke Theisen and Makenzie Fore all scored in the inning for the Titans. Eastern Florida State College would add two more in the fourth inning as Courtney Stout would score on a fielder's choice and then Kaitlyn Wilson singled, scoring Theisen.

While the Titans were putting up runs, starting pitcher Trinity Howard was keeping Miami Dade off the scoreboard. With two on and two out in the fourth inning, shortstop Courtney Stout made a great over the shoulder catch in short left field to end the threat.

Howard got into trouble in the sixth inning as Miami Dade cut the lead to 5-2 before Mandy Hedetniemi-Taylor came in with two on and one out. Taylor got a groundout and then got the strikeout to end the threat.

The Titans would add two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Wilson had an RBI single and Molly Reid hit a sacrifice fly.

Miami Dade would score in the top of the seventh inning but with the bases loaded and two out, Kayla Domon caught a high fly ball to end the game.

In Game 2, Miami Dade would score in each of the first three innings and led 4-1 in the middle of the third inning. But the Titans got the bats going as Domon ripped a triple to the wall, then scored on Theisen's single bringing up Makenzie Fore.

Fore would crush a pitch over the left field wall for her third home run of the season. The two-run shot would tie the game.

Trinity Howard would relieve Game 2 starter Ariana Gonzalez in the fifth inning and held Miami Dade in check until the top of the seventh.

Miami Dade would score four times in the inning to take an 8-4 lead. Eastern Florida State College threatened in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases but Miami Dade turned a double play to end the game and earn the split.

Eastern Florida State College, who is now 19-19 overall and 7-7 in the conference, will travel to Indian River State College on Monday for a conference doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
