Softball team falls short against Lake Sumter

The Eastern Florida State College softball team's rally fell short against Lake Sumter State College in the final game of the JUCO Kickoff at Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater.

Down 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Titans loaded the bases but could not tie the game. Eastern Florida State College fell to 1-3 in the tournament.

Mandy Hedetniema-Taylor took the ball and tossed five scoreless innings, striking out eight hitters.

It looked like she may pick up her second win of the season as the Titans scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, highlighted by Molly Reid's two-run double.

But Lake Sumter came back with five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead. Eastern Florida State College would score in the bottom of the sixth inning as Courtney Stout singled and scored on Kaitlyn Wilson's sacrifice fly.

The Titans would load the bases with one out, but a fielder's choice that got the out at home and a groundout ended the game.

Eastern Florida State College will host Daytona State College Thursday in the home opener with the first game of the doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
