Softball team sweeps Miami Dade, improves to 6-0 in conference
The Eastern Florida State College softball team is off to its best conference start in years after sweeping Miami Dade College Saturday at the Titan Softball Complex.
The Titans improved to 6-0 in the conference with the 2-1 and 6-4 victories.
"Miami Dade plays about as hard as any team in the conference, we have watched them play and they fight, they battle and you can never count them out of a game," Eastern Florida State College softball coach Jim Beitia said. "We got two great wins today against a team that plays as hard as anyone."
In Game 1, Katelyn Wilfert allowed three hits and one earned run to pick up her 13th win of the season.
Both runs came in the second inning as Emily Bartlett lad off with a double and scored on Wilfert's double. Wilfert would later score on Hailey Profeta's sacrifice fly.
It was all Wilfert needed as she retired 14 hitters in a row and 16 of the final 18 she faced.
The starting pitcher finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while teammate Nikki Pennington also had two hits.
In Game 2 it seemed every time the Titans took the lead Miami Dade would tie it back up but the Titans took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning when Haiey Profeta doubled and scored on an errant throw after a nice bunt by Alice Gannaway. Gannaway would later score on a wild pitch to make it 6-4.
Wilfert, who relieved starter McKinleigh Millard in the fourth inning picked up the win, her 14th of the season.
Offnsively, Madison Neuhaus went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored while Profeta and Abigail Thompson each had two hits as the Titans finished Game 2 with 12 hits.
The Titans lead the Southern Conference at 6-0 and will host Indian River State College Wednesday in a conference doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Admission to Titan Softball Complex is free.
"This is a great start and I think it will give us some confidence but we saw at the conference tournament that it is going to be a battle to see who will get the two state tournament spots," Beitia said.
