Softball team earns split with College of Central Florida

The Eastern Florida State College softball team earned a split against No. 6 College of Central Florida Saturday on the road.

The Titans defeated the College of Central Florida 3-2 in 10 innings in Game 1 behind the bat of Nikki Pennington.

Pennington hit her third home run of the season in the sixth inning, a two-run shot to give the Titans a 2-0 lead. The Patriots would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning and it remained 2-2 until the 10th inning. With a player at second base, Pennington drove in the winning run with a single in the top of the 10th.

Freshman starter Katelyn Wilfert pitched all 10 innings, picking up her fourth win of the season.

Game 2 was back and forth throughout the game. In the top of the fifth inning and the game tied 5-5, Alice Gannaway hit an RBI double to give the Titans the lead. But the Patriots would tie it back up 6-6 in the bottom of the fifth.

Then in the top of the seventh inning, Morgan Johnston ripped an RBI double to give the Titans a 7-6 lead but two home runs by the College of Central Florida gave the Patriots the 8-7 win and a split.

The Titans will travel to the State College of Florida Manatee on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
