Diaz hits walk-off single as Titan softball team splits with Palm Beach State

Brooke Diaz stepped to the plate with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning of a tie game and hit a single that scored Mary Waldron as the Eastern Florida State College softball team beat first-place Palm Beach State College in the first game of a doubleheader at Titan Softball Complex Friday afternoon.

Palm Beach State won the second game 6-3 to earn the split.

In the first game, Palm Beach State struck first with two runs in the first inning but the Titans took the lead with four runs in the third as Diaz had a two-run single and Abby Ferlin followed with a two-run double. The Panthers would tie it up on a two-run home run by Jess Onega in the fifth.

Waldron, who was one of three players with two hits in the first game, hit a double in the seventh and scored on the Diaz single. Ferlin also had two hits.

In Game 2, Palm Beach State took an early 4-0 lead but the Titans inched their way back, scoring a run in the second and two in the fifth as Ferlin had an RBI single and Karli Smith drove in a run on a groundout.

The Titans have now won four of their past eight games and improved to 11-29 on the season and 4-12 in the Southern Conference. They will travel to Indian River State College next Friday for a Southern Conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
