First win at softball complex a thrilling walkoff victory

The Eastern Florida State College softball team opened the new complex with a walkoff victory Tuesday night.

Brooke Diaz came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and laced a single to left field to drive in the game-winning run in a 5-4 victory over Daytona State.

"It was a 3-2 count so you either have to get a hit or a walk. I was thinking just get the base hit, that is all I was looking for," said Diaz who finished 1-for-3.

Down 3-0 early in the game the Titans came back and tied the game in the fifth inning as Jordan Lawlis drove in a pair of runs with a triple.

Daytona State would regain the lead in the sixth before the Titans stormed back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim the win in the first-ever game in the new complex.

"To win our first game on this field, it felt awesome," Diaz said.

Daytona State would win the second game 11-1 in five innings to earn a split.

Eastern Florida State College President Dr. Jim Richey threw out the first pitch to officially open the softball complex on the Melbourne campus.

The Titans, who are now 1-5 this season, will travel to Lake Sumter State College Thursday afternoon for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. The team will be back at home Feb. 9.
