Men's tennis team has good day at national tournament

The Eastern Florida State College men's tennis team won five of the six second-round singles matches at the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament Tuesday in Plano, Texas.

Bad weather in Plano, Texas pushed all of the matches to six SMU's indoor courts, pushing the doubles matches to Wednesday.

Sophomore Dario Kmet defeated Lake County's Billy Friedman 6-2, 6-1 at No 2 singles to advance to the quarterfinals. The No. 1 seed will play Mesa's Leandro Prado at 8 a.m.

Sophomore Mikar Fisher beat USC-Sumter Sabri Laphitz 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to advance to the quarterfinals. The No. 2 seed will play Wallace State's Tristian Du Plessis at 8 a.m.

Freshman Ramiro Rincon defeated Sauk Valley's Jacob Terveer 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. The No. 4 seed will play No. 5 seed Lorenzo Del Biondo from ABAC in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Freshman Sergio Gomez Boix beat Ryan Christensen 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and the No. 1 seed will play Mesa's Duncan Mulenga at 9:30 a.m. in the quarterfinals.

Freshman Jaewoo Choi defeated Mesa's Hung Pham 6-1, 6-0. Choi will play No. 3 seed Javi Pla of Cowley at 9:30 a.m. in the quarterfinals.

No. 1 singles player Tomas Reche lost to No. 3 seed Gaston Cantero of ABAC 6-4, 6-1.

The three doubles teams will all be in action Wednesday afternoon with the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams playing at noon and the No. 3 doubles playing at 1:15 p.m.
