Men's tennis team to compete in ITA Regional Championships

The Eastern Florida State College men's tennis team will compete in the ITA Men's JUCO Regional Championships at Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina this weekend.

The ITA Regional Championships will be the first tournament of the fall season for the Titans who return two players from last year's team that advanced to the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament.

"It's been very good to be back, had a good vacation in Denmark this summer," sophomore Frederik Oervad said. "We have a lot of new players this season and it has been good. I learned a lot last year about playing as a team and just have more experience and looking forward to seeing new teams and playing a lot of good matches."

The tournament will begin Friday and end on Sunday with the champions advancing to the 2019 ITA Cup in Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Georgia Oct. 17-20.

Last season, Oervad landed one of the at-large bids to the ITA Cup after his runner-up finish at the ITA Regional Championships. The sophomore from Denmark finished eighth last season and is looking to qualify for the ITA Cup again this season.

"It's the biggest tournament this fall, everyone is doing their best to get ready and it will be a fight," Oervad said. "The whole atmosphere will be intense and the competition will be good."
