Azucey and Oervad team up to win national tourney opener

Eastern Florida State College's men's tennis team opened the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament, going 1-1 on Opening Day at the Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Arizona.

The No. 1 doubles team of Adriel Azucey and Frederik Oervad lost the first set 7-6 but battled back to win the next two sets 6-4 and 6-3 to advance to the round of 16.

"A good start for the 1 doubles for us," Eastern Florida State College assistant men's tennis coach Brandon Stokes said. "We have a big day tomorrow as we play matches all day."

The duo will play No. 1 seed Frederic Fibleuil and Lukas Zavrel of ABAC Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. MST.  

The No. 3 doubles team of Sebastian Bunster and Fabricio Galvan fell in the first round 6-3, 6-4 and will play in the consolation round on Wednesday.

All six of the singles players received byes in the first round and will open play on Tuesday.

Oervad is the No. 5 seed at No. 1 singles and will play Lake County's Mike Sims at 8 a.m., while Michel is the second seed at No. 2 singles and will play Barton's Oswaldo Cano at 9 a.m. Azucey is the third seed at No. 3 singles and opens against Martins Abamu from New Mexico Military.

Galvan is a No. 5 seed at No. 4 singles and opens at 10:30 a.m. against Barton's Mariano Cabrera while Bunster is the sixth seed at No. 5 singles and will face Collin's Juan Carlos Garrido at noon. Nicholas Mora is the fourth seed at No. 6 singles and plays Wallace State's Zachary Mastin at 12:30 p.m.
