Men's soccer team sets shutout record with 3-0 win Friday

The Eastern Florida State College men's soccer team posted its sixth straight shutout Friday night, setting a program record at Orlando Health Stadium on the Melbourne campus.

The No. 3-ranked Titans defeated Spartanburg Methodist 3-0 Friday night extending the shutout streak to six games. The defensive unit has not allowed a goal since Aug. 25 and has outscored opponents 30-4 this season.

On Friday night the Titans got on the board early as Abdoulaye Diop scored on a penalty kick in the first five minutes of the match for his first goal of the season.

Then with under 15 minutes left in the first half sophomore Marc Grifell scored his third goal to make it 2-0.

Freshman Mario Licor would score his second goal of the season on an assist from Joseph Macpherson to make it 3-0 in the second half.

But the night belonged to the defense with Nour Moaoui in goal and defenders Moussa Gueye, Curtez Kellman, Macpherson, Nathaniel Campbell, Chris Dilan, Perrie Nascimento, Collin Robidoux, Angel Flores leading the way.

"Really proud of the boys' defensive effort the past six games, we continue to defend very strong from the front as well and keep the clean sheet," Eastern Florida State College men's soccer coach Oliver Twelvetrees said. "We could have scored a few more goals tonight and would like to see us be a bit more clinical and have a little bit more cohesion in the penalty box area but will take a 3-0 win against a well-organized, well-coached team in Spartanburg."

The Titans, who improved to 8-1 on the season, will host Montgomery College at 2 p.m. Sunday. Montgomery and Spartanburg Methodist will meet at noon on Saturday at Orlando Health Stadium. Admission is free to soccer games on the Melbourne campus.
