Men's soccer team tops Daytona State, advances to conference championship game

Sophomore Abdul Ganiyu Iddrisu made his final game at Titan Soccer Complex a special one, scoring the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Daytona State College.

The Titans picked up the win to advance to the Region 8 Conference Championship Game on Saturday night.

Iddrisu scored his third goal of the season with five minutes, 41 seconds remaining to give the Titans the lead for good.

"Playing a rival like Daytona, you have to just go out and give everything you have. Such a great feeling," Iddrisu said of scoring the game winner. "I saw the ball come across and I said this is it. This is it. I have to bury it. Fortunately, I was able to put it in and we were able to hold on."

The game was physical from the start as the two teams battled for every loose ball throughout a scoreless first half.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Titans broke through as sophomore Aedon Kyra found the back of the net to give the Titans the lead.

It looked as though Eastern Florida State College would hang on for the win, but Daytona State College tied things up with eight minutes to go which set up Iddrisu's game-winning goal.

"It was a crazy game and Daytona State is such a fantastic team, but our guys played with such heart and desire tonight," Eastern Florida State College men's soccer coach Oliver Twevetrees said. "I am really proud that the boys were able to find the energy, the ability and decision making to get that game-winner. It truly was a team effort."

The Titans advance to the Region 8 Championship game for the fourth straight season. They will travel to Broward College on Saturday night for a 6 p.m. game. The winner will advance to the Southeast District semifinals next weekend.
